Flat-Pack vs Rigid Kitchen Units for Trade Projects

Short answer: rigid cabinets arrive built and glued, so your fitter hangs them straight away and there is very little packaging to clear. Flat-packed cabinets arrive as panels to assemble on site, which takes labour but stores in a fraction of the space and carries far more easily through tight access. For most trade work rigid is the better economics; flat-pack wins where access, storage or a long gap between delivery and second fix decides it. Rigid assembly does not include installation.
This decision gets made casually and then affects the whole job. It changes how long your fitter is on site, how much space you need to store the kitchen, how much waste leaves the property, and how square the finished run is. Worth ten minutes of thought rather than a habit.

What each one actually is
Rigid
The carcass is assembled and glued before it leaves the supplier. It arrives as a finished box — sides, base, top rails and back already together and square — ready to be levelled, joined to its neighbours and fixed to the wall. What it does not include is installation. Brooklands does not fit kitchens; rigid assembly means the cabinet arrives built, not that anyone puts it in the room. Flat-packed
The same cabinet supplied as a set of panels with the fixings, to be assembled on site. Every unit in the unit range is the same product either way — the same panels, the same widths, the same doors. The difference is only where and when it gets put together.

Site labour is the real difference
Assembling a kitchen's worth of cabinets is not a small task. It is a meaningful part of a day for one person on a typical kitchen, and it happens at the point in the programme where you least want a delay — after the strip-out, with a fitter already on site and being paid.
Rigid moves that work off the critical path entirely. On a single kitchen it shortens the job. On a scheme of forty plots it removes the same task forty times over, which is where the argument stops being about convenience and becomes about programme.
The other saving is less obvious: nobody spends time reading assembly instructions, hunting a missing cam fixing or working out which panel is the left-hand side. Small frictions, repeated across every cabinet in a kitchen.
Storage and access
This is where flat-pack earns its place. A rigid kitchen occupies the volume of a finished kitchen from the moment it arrives, and it needs somewhere dry, secure and out of the way of other trades. On a property where the only available space is the room the kitchen is going into, that is genuinely awkward.
Access is the harder constraint. Rigid cabinets are a fixed size: they cannot be turned into something narrower to get past a half-landing, through a loft conversion staircase, or into a first-floor flat with a tight communal core. Measure the route before you commit — not just the doorways but the turns, the ceiling height on the stairs and the width at the newel post. If the largest cabinet in the schedule will not make the journey, the decision is already made for you.
Packaging and waste
Flat-pack generates a lot of cardboard, film and polystyrene, all of it produced inside the property and all of it needing to leave again. On a domestic refurbishment that is a nuisance. On a multi-plot scheme it is a genuine cost line and a genuine handover problem, because a plot full of packaging is a plot that is not finished.
Rigid arrives with far less material around it. If you are handing a property back clean at the end of a void, or completing plots against a sales programme, that difference shows up in labour and skip volume.
Squareness and structural rigidity
A glued carcass assembled under controlled conditions is square and stays square. That matters more than it sounds, because everything else in a kitchen is set from the carcass. Doors align to the box. Drawer runners are only as parallel as the sides they are screwed to. A worktop sits on the top rails, and a run of cabinets that are each a couple of millimetres out of true produces a line of doors that will never quite look right.
Flat-pack can be built perfectly square — plenty of fitters do it every week. It simply depends on the care taken, on a flat floor to build on, and on someone checking the diagonals rather than assuming. On a wet Tuesday at the end of a long job, with eighteen cabinets to build, that assumption is exactly where it goes wrong.
Damage in transit
Both formats travel well, and both can be marked. Rigid cabinets present more exposed corners; flat panels can be scuffed on the face or the edge. The practical point is the same either way: check the delivery on the day it arrives, not on the day the fitter opens the boxes.

When flat-pack is genuinely the better call
There is no virtue in specifying rigid everywhere. Take flat-pack when:
- Access will not take a built cabinet. Tight stairwells, half-landings, apartment cores, loft conversions.
- Storage is limited and the kitchen has to sit somewhere for a while before second fix.
- Delivery is well ahead of the fit and flat boxes are easier to keep out of the way of other trades.
- The work is being done in stages — a single wall at a time in an occupied property, for example.
- You are fitting it yourself and your own time is the cheapest input on the job.

What about cost?
Rigid costs more to supply than flat-pack, because the work of assembling the cabinet has been done for you. That is the straightforward part.
The comparison that matters is the fitted cost, not the supply cost. Put the supply difference alongside the labour hours saved on site, the packaging you do not have to remove, and the value of finishing a plot or a void sooner. On trade work those figures frequently point the other way from the invoice line. Price it properly for your own job rather than assuming — ask for both on the same quotation and compare the totals against your own labour rate. How to decide, job by job
- Measure the access route, including turns and stair width — not just doorways.
- Identify where the kitchen will be stored, and for how long.
- Count the labour hours assembly would take at your own rate.
- Ask who is clearing the packaging, and what that costs.
- Check whether the fit is a single continuous visit or staged.
- Get both priced on one quotation and compare the fitted totals.
Whichever you choose, the rest of the specification is unaffected. Doors, handles, worktops, upstands, sinks and taps and appliances are identical either way, as are the highline base, wall and larder cabinet sizes themselves.
